Why a professional cleanout

A season of beauty starts with
one thorough cleaning

Every pond in Central Oregon collects a winter's worth of debris. Pine needles, leaves, and dust settle to the bottom and break down into a layer of muck that feeds algae, clouds your water, and stresses your fish. A surface skim will not fix it. What your pond needs each spring is a true cleanout: a full drain, a deep clean, fresh water, and a biological restart.

Deschutes Water Gardens provides professional pond cleaning across Bend, Redmond, Sisters, and the surrounding Central Oregon area. We clean koi ponds, ecosystem ponds, pondless waterfalls, and fountainscapes of every size, whether we built them or someone else did. One visit and your water feature looks the way it did the day it was finished.

Spring pond cleanout season

Central Oregon springs are short.
Your cleanout window is shorter.

In the high desert, spring arrives late and summer arrives fast. The ideal window for a spring pond cleanout is when water temperatures sit between 40 and 55 degrees, typically April through late May in the Bend area. Clean during that window and the beneficial bacteria establish before the heat arrives, so your pond enters summer balanced and clear.

Miss the window and the intense high desert sun does the opposite. Water warms, the winter muck becomes fuel, and algae wins the race before the good biology can catch up. That is why the ponds that struggle every July are almost always the ponds that skipped their spring cleanout.

Cleanout slots fill quickly once the snow melts. Call now and get on the spring schedule early.

How it works

Our full drain and clean process

A proper pond cleaning is a system, not a chore list. Here is exactly what happens when we clean your pond, start to finish, usually in a single visit.

1
Drain down and fish care
We pump your pond down while capturing your koi and goldfish safely. Your fish wait out the cleaning in a shaded holding tank filled with their own pond water and constant aeration, which keeps their stress low and their chemistry familiar.
2
Muck and debris removal
With the pond drained, we remove the accumulated sludge, leaves, pine needles, and organic buildup from the bottom and between the rocks. This is the single most important step, because muck is the fuel source for summer algae blooms.
3
Rock and gravel wash
We pressure rinse the boulders, gravel, and liner to lift fine debris without stripping away all of the mature biofilm your ecosystem depends on. Waterfalls and stream beds get the same treatment so everything sparkles again.
4
Filter and pump service
Skimmer baskets, filter mats, and biological media get cleaned or replaced. We inspect the pump, check flow rates, clean the impeller, inspect plumbing and fittings for leaks, and confirm lights, aerators, and autofill valves all work as they should.
5
Refill and water treatment
We refill the pond and treat the fresh water with a detoxifier that neutralizes chlorine and chloramines, then temper your fish back into the pond gradually so the transition is gentle and safe.
6
Beneficial bacteria restart
Finally we dose the pond with beneficial bacteria to reestablish the biological engine that keeps water clear and healthy. We leave you with a simple treatment schedule so the ecosystem keeps building over the following weeks.

Included in every cleanout

Everything your pond needs
in one visit

Muck removal
Winter sludge and organic buildup removed from the bottom, the rock crevices, and the stream bed. Less muck means less algae, fewer odors, and healthier fish all summer.
Filter and pump service
Skimmers, biological filters, and pumps cleaned, inspected, and tuned. Catching a tired pump or a clogged filter in April prevents an emergency in July.
Water treatment
Fresh water detoxified and conditioned, with dechlorination for municipal water and a gentle reintroduction process for koi and goldfish.
Beneficial bacteria restart
A fresh colony of beneficial bacteria seeded into the filter and gravel so the natural ecosystem, not chemicals, keeps your water clear.
Koi pond cleaning
Koi pond cleaning across Central Oregon with safe fish handling, aerated holding tanks, and water chemistry checks before your fish go back home.
Inspection report
A quick walkthrough of what we found: liner condition, equipment health, plant recommendations, and anything worth watching before it becomes a repair.

One cleanout makes it beautiful.
A maintenance plan keeps it that way.

A spring cleanout gives your pond a perfect starting point. What happens next determines whether it still looks that way in August. Most of our cleanout customers move onto a recurring maintenance plan, and their ponds are the ones that never turn green, never smell, and never have a surprise equipment failure.

Common questions

Pond cleaning FAQ

How much does pond cleaning cost in Bend, Oregon?
Most full cleanouts in the Bend area run between $400 and $1,500 depending on pond size, fish load, and how much muck has accumulated. A small fountainscape sits at the low end, while a large koi pond that has skipped a few seasons sits at the high end. We quote every job up front after a few quick questions, so there are no surprises. Call 971-322-9407 for a quote.
When should I schedule a spring pond cleanout?
The ideal window in Central Oregon is April through late May, when water temperatures are between 40 and 55 degrees. Cleaning in that range is easiest on your fish and gives beneficial bacteria time to establish before summer heat. Slots go fast once the weather turns, so booking in March or early April is the safest play.
Is a full drain safe for my koi?
Yes, when it is done correctly. Your fish spend the cleaning in a shaded, aerated holding tank filled with their own pond water, which keeps the chemistry they are used to. When the pond is refilled, we treat the new water and temper the fish back in gradually. This is the standard professional process and thousands of koi ponds get cleaned this way every spring.
How often should a pond be fully cleaned?
Once a year for most Central Oregon ponds, in the spring. Ponds under heavy pine cover, ponds with large fish loads, and ponds that skipped fall netting sometimes benefit from a lighter fall cleaning as well. A pond on a regular maintenance plan often needs less aggressive cleanouts over time because debris never gets the chance to accumulate.
What is the difference between a cleanout and regular maintenance?
A cleanout is the annual reset: full drain, deep clean, equipment service, and biological restart. Maintenance is everything that keeps the pond balanced between cleanouts: water treatments, algae control, filter rinses, plant care, and equipment checks. The cleanout gets your pond to perfect, and ongoing maintenance keeps it there. They work best together.
My water is green right now. Do I need a full cleanout?
Not always. Green water in early summer is often an algae bloom that treatments and filtration adjustments can solve without a drain. But if the green keeps coming back, the underlying cause is usually a layer of muck feeding it, and a full cleanout is the fix that actually lasts. Give us a call, describe what you are seeing, and we will tell you honestly which one you need.
Do you clean ponds you did not build?
Absolutely. We clean and service ponds and water features of all kinds across Central Oregon regardless of who built them, including all Aquascape systems, ecosystem ponds, pondless waterfalls, and fountainscapes.
What areas do you serve?
We provide pond cleaning across all of Central Oregon including Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Tumalo, Prineville, Terrebonne, and Culver. Not sure if we reach your area? Call us at 971-322-9407.
