Custom koi ponds — Bend, Oregon

More than a water feature.
A backyard transformation.

A koi pond is one of the most rewarding outdoor upgrades a Central Oregon homeowner can make. The sound of moving water, the color of koi beneath the surface, the way natural boulders and aquatic plants come together — it creates a space you want to spend time in every single day.

We design and install custom koi ponds across Bend, Redmond, Sisters, and the surrounding area using Aquascape products — the gold standard in the water feature industry. Every pond we build is designed as a true ecosystem: self-balancing water chemistry, biological filtration, and natural plantings that reduce maintenance and support healthy fish for years to come.

Central Oregon's high desert climate creates unique challenges for koi ponds — intense summer sun accelerates algae growth, and winters require thoughtful design to protect both fish and equipment. We build with all of that in mind from day one. Once your pond is established, our ongoing maintenance plans keep it crystal-clear through every season without you having to think about it.

What we build

Every koi pond includes

Ecosystem design
Biological and mechanical filtration balanced to create a self-sustaining pond that stays clear with minimal intervention.
Natural rock and gravel
Locally sourced boulders and river gravel placed to look like the pond has always been part of your landscape.
Aquascape pump and filtration
Energy-efficient Aquascape pumps, skimmers, and biological filters engineered to keep water healthy and fish thriving.
Waterfall feature
A cascading waterfall adds oxygen, sound, and movement — and is one of the most loved features of any koi pond.
Aquatic plants
Water lilies, marginal plants, and floating plants that shade the water, reduce algae, and give koi places to rest and hide.
Winter-ready construction
Proper depth, aeration placement, and equipment selection so your koi survive Central Oregon winters safely and comfortably.

Common questions

Koi pond FAQ

How deep does a koi pond need to be in Central Oregon?
For Central Oregon winters, we recommend a minimum depth of 3 to 4 feet. This allows koi to move below the freeze line and stay safe during cold snaps in Bend and the surrounding area. Shallower ponds can work with the right aeration and a de-icer, but deeper is always better for fish health and winter survival. We design every pond with local winter conditions in mind.
How many koi can I have in my pond?
The general rule is 250 gallons of water per adult koi, and 500 gallons per jumbo koi. A starter pond of around 6 by 8 feet holds roughly 1,900 gallons and can comfortably support 6 to 8 adult fish. Overstocking is the most common cause of water quality problems, so we always design the filtration system around your fish goals, not just the pond size.
How long does it take to install a koi pond?
Most koi pond installations in the Bend area take 2 to 5 days depending on size and complexity. After installation, the pond needs 2 to 4 weeks to cycle biologically before it is ready for koi. We walk you through the entire startup process and tell you exactly when your water is ready for fish.
How much does it cost to maintain a koi pond per year?
Annual maintenance for a professionally installed koi pond in Central Oregon typically runs $600 to $2,000 depending on pond size and how much you handle yourself. This includes spring clean-outs, summer water quality treatments, fall prep, and winter monitoring. Our pond maintenance plans take all of that off your plate for a predictable annual cost.
Will koi survive a Central Oregon winter?
Yes — koi are very cold-hardy and can survive winters in Bend and surrounding areas when the pond is properly designed. They enter a semi-dormant state as water temperatures drop, slow their metabolism, and stop eating below about 50 degrees. The keys are adequate depth, a good aeration system to keep a hole in any surface ice, and not feeding them once temperatures drop. We design for all of this from the start.
Do koi ponds attract mosquitoes?
No — a properly built koi pond actually reduces mosquitoes. Koi actively eat mosquito larvae, and the constant water movement from the waterfall and pump prevents the standing water that mosquitoes need to breed. A stagnant, unfiltered pond is a mosquito problem. A well-designed ecosystem pond with fish and flow is not.
Can I pair a koi pond with a xeriscape?
Absolutely — and it is one of the best combinations in Central Oregon right now. A xeriscape surround of native ornamental grasses, sage, and decomposed granite around your pond looks incredible, uses virtually no water, and requires almost no upkeep. The pond recirculates its own water, so together you get a lush, living outdoor space that is genuinely water-smart. Visit our xeriscaping page to learn more — including the City of Bend's rebate of up to $3,000 for qualifying projects.
